What is Safe Railing Guard?
Smart Retract’s Safe Railing Guard is an innovative indoor/outdoor product that is fastened to deck or balcony railings to help keep pets and children from slipping through the spindles. Made from the same tough mesh material as the Retract-A-Gate and Bow Wow Barrier, it is washable and holds up well to outdoor use. It’s unlikely to rip and won’t become brittle or cracked like a solid plastic material will when used for extended time outside. This versatile fabric can be used in many different ways.
- Blocking off the spindles along a balcony
- Covering open railings outdoors on the deck
- Making a visual barrier to indicate a closed-off area
- Covering spindles along the posts on a stairway
This mesh is offered in bulk quantities of 5-foot increments, and in the colors of Café, White, and Black. Like the Retract-A-Gate and the Bow Wow Barrier, the Safe Railing Guard mesh has 1-inch hems on the top and bottom. It can easily be adapted to nearly any area or application since the mesh can be cut to whatever length or angle is needed.
Please note that this fabric cannot be used as a replacement mesh or extension for the Retract-A-Gate or the Bow Wow Barrier.

Basic Dimensions
The mesh of Safe Railing Guard is 34 inches tall, including the 1-inch hems on the top and bottom. It is sold in increments of 5 feet, including a set of 10 straps, each 17 inches long.
How is the mesh fabric installed?
Installing the Safe Railing Guard is simple and can be accomplished in a few simple steps.
- Make a hole in a corner of the bottom hem at least 1/2 inch away from the edge.
- Using one of the included straps, secure the mesh near the bottom of the spindle or post, and repeat this process for the top.
- With the first side secured, repeat the process every 12-18 inches, keeping the mesh even and removing the slack in the fabric.
- Before attaching the mesh to the last spindle or post, mark and cut the mesh to the desired length. After attaching all the straps, trim away the excess fabric close to the ratchet end of the strap to avoid sharp edges. For full installation instructions, click here.

What is the Safe Railing Guard made of?
Like the Retract-A-Gate and the Bow Wow Barrier, the fabric for Smart Retract’s Safe Railing Guard is made of a tough, non-toxic reinforced polymer composite material. It does not contain lead, phthalate, latex, or BPA chemicals, and it is free of formaldehyde. The fabric also holds up well to scratching and is resistant to UV rays and mildew.
How durable is the Safe Railing Guard?
To evaluate the toughness and durability of the Safe Railing Guard, the mesh fabric was subjected to several tests. For one test, a piece of the mesh was fastened to a cat scratching post. Even after several months of use by mature cats, the fabric still had not ripped. In another example, this same mesh has also been used in the back of semi-trucks to cover and hold down cargo.
