How Does The Retract-A-Gate Close?
Operating the Retract-A-Gate is a breeze:
- Snap the retractable safety gate into the wall brackets on one side of the doorway or opening, making sure the lock is in the unlocked position.
- Using the handle rod, pull the fabric across and hook it into the wall brackets.
- Next, lock the retractable safety gate by pushing down and then turning the knob on top. This prevents the mesh from unwinding once it’s secured in position.
- Always keep the gate in the locked position (see photo).
How Does The Retract-A-Gate Open?
To retract the gate, simply unlock and unhook the handle rod from the wall brackets. The internal spring automatically rewinds the mesh, so no hand-winding is needed. The entire process is easily done with one hand and takes just seconds. See the photo animation for demonstration.
Easy Installation Instructions
A major advantage of the Retract-A-Gate by Smart Retract is its easy installation. The safety gate can be mounted on either side of most openings—at the top or bottom of a staircase (Baby Safety Alliance—formerly JPMA—verified), in a doorway, on the wall around the side of a walkway, and even at most angles. Install the top brackets first, about 30½ inches off the floor. Mount the lower brackets next, between 3-4 inches off the floor. Then simply snap the gate into the brackets. Your Retract-A-Gate is now ready to keep your baby, child, dog, or cat safer!

Can You Make A Custom Gate Wider Than 72 Inches?
Presently, Smart Retract only makes retractable gates for openings up to 72 inches. For wider openings, we offer connection accessories that allow multiple gates to work together for easy coverage (visual barrier, non-certified use).
Is This Gate Recommended For Dogs And Cats?
Retract-A-Gate is designed to be one of the tallest retractable safety gates available, and it’s designed to keep most pets from jumping or climbing over. Also, our mesh fabric is highly scratch-resistant. To test the durability of the mesh, we attached a piece of the fabric to a scratching post in a house with cats. After several months of use, the fabric still had not ripped. When introducing a new puppy or kitten into the home, the Retract-A-Gate can work well as a barrier to contain them to a certain area.
What Makes Retract-A-Gate Verified For Infants And Children?
Smart Retract’s Retract-A-Gate has been professionally tested by an independent facility for compliance with the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM), is CE certified meeting European standard EN1930, exceeds Canadian Safety Standards, and is Baby Safety Alliance (formerly JPMA) verified for use at the top and bottom of the stairs. The Baby Safety Alliance (formerly Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) is a national organization dedicated to educating consumers on the safe use and selection of juvenile products.
To maintain their verification, Retract-A-Gate models are retested annually. To be verified for top-of-stairs installations, the retractable baby gate must be mounted with screws, which is what the Retract-A-Gate wall brackets require. Pressure-mounted baby gates do not meet this specification.
Could I Install My Safety Gate At An Angle?
Yes, that’s a common use of the Retract-A-Gate. A great advantage of Smart Retract’s gate over other safety gates is that Retract-A-Gate can be installed on a diagonal and work at nearly any angle. This is because the wall brackets were engineered to give you this versatility.
